There's much confusion about the various optical coatings available today, partly a result of the huge influx of the many varieties of optics coming from places like China. Specifically, many imported binocular models boast about all kinds of "high tech" coatings and depending, of course, on the price of the binocular, the features and coatings can be quite different and often very confusing.

First, a little background about binocular construction. Usually, each side of a binocular will include at least 8 lens: two lens for the objective, two prisms and 4 lens for eyepiece. Some lens (elements) are cemented together. For …

Every year around this time my brother and I, and a few buddies, head up to the Wisconsin North Woods for a little R&R. We usually bring in enough supplies for three days. I do not wish to disclose the location, but I can say it’s off the beaten path. So far we've read a lot about using a binocular for multiple uses…during the day.  So, how about at night?  Absolutely!  Plenty of options out there in the night vision binocular category as well!  Plenty of activity to see when the sun goes down and you'll need a night vision device to see it, so why not a night vision binocular?

Many people have the assumption that a Night vision device will break the bank.  Well, that is not true!  You can get a great unit for the same price as a mid range binocular, ie, plus or minus the …

Last week I had the opportunity to speak with a state park ranger from Connecticut, I believe, that had a unique need for a binocular with about 20X magnification. It seems that one of their oceanfront locations has a public beach with its own lifeguards and not too far away is another area that experiences a very cool daily phenomenon. Every day at low-tide a huge sand bar is revealed and creates a path to a nearby island. The island is loaded with plants and wildlife and considered a nature preserve as well as somewhat of a sanctuary for exotic …
